EMDR

A past or current trauma can impact every area of your life.  Whether you want to move on or just get through whatever is happening now, trauma can leave scars that are often difficult to heal on your own.  If you’re here, you probably don’t want to feel burdened and upset anymore.  EMDR helps people who experience PTSD and trauma including interpersonal violence, sexual assault, childhood trauma and complex trauma.

EMDR is a research-backed trauma therapy that uses our understanding of neuroscience to change how our brain deals with traumatic memories and traumatic stress.  It works by helping to reprocess traumatic memories to make them less emotionally intense and overwhelming.

As a result, your body, emotions, and brain can heal after years of feeling disconnected and distressed.  With the help of EMDR Therapy, you may notice that feelings that previously felt too intense or overwhelming have less of a hold over you.  You may also notice your relationships with others improve, as well as an overall improved functioning in various areas of your life.

Individual sessions

I provide a safe, empathic container within which you are supported to be yourself, feel your feelings, and express the truth without being judged or shamed. If you have been pretending you are okay when you’re not, if you’ve been hiding your heartache or fear, be prepared to relieve yourself of that stress.

We will weave together talk therapy and creative techniques to access new avenues through which you may tell your own stories, express your feelings, and explore the depth of your inner experience allowing for growth and the capacity to reframe obstacles .

Family sessions

I believe that families function as a system. When one family member is struggling, everyone is. If part of the system grows, everyone grows. Family therapy sessions focus on understanding individuals’ thoughts, feelings and behavior within the context of their families. The goal is to identify and strengthen family resources, and help family members work collaboratively toward solutions to their problems.

I help couples and families with problems including, but not limited to, school difficulties, child and adolescent problems, gender and LGBTQIA+ topics, marital issues, divorce, bereavement, learning disabilities, conflictual family relationships, child abuse and incest, and chronic medical illnesses.

CHILD PLAY THERAPY

Child play therapy is a type of therapy that meets a child at their unique developmental level and looks for ways of helping them in the “language” of the child – play.  Rather than expecting children to verbally engage in sessions, to resolve their presenting problems and discuss coping strategies, the act of play can achieve the same results.

Play therapy works well for children ages three to twelve-years-old, (and sometimes adults as well) to better express themselves and resolve their problems. Play therapy is effective in treating disorders like depression, anxiety, and ADHD, as well as helping with learning and physical disabilities. Additionally, it’s useful in addressing conduct disorders and autism and helping to manage behavioral problems that commonly result from divorce, grief, trauma, and anger. It can also be used for helping children take more responsibility for certain behaviors. While play therapy may look like ordinary playtime, it is much more than that.
